Stories2 min Read

If it wasn't Star Wars or Harry Potter, you mightbe one of the kids who were convinced they were from Middle Earth.
The Lord of the Rings, originally written by J.R.R. Tolkien, was one of those legendary movies our generation will probably take with them to parenthood and beyond. 'The Lord of the Rings' is one of those things that keeps us young and feeling fifteen forever.

But let's take a trip down memory lane and look back to the time 'The Lord of the Rings' cast got matching tattoos by the end of filming 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' in England. That was back in 2001.In the premiere at the Odeon Cinema in London's Leicester Square, Elijah Woods explained:

"We felt the experience was both wonderful enough and profound enough to have ourselves branded," Wood said, "so we went ahead and did that about a week before we finished."

While Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn, revealed:

"We all got the same one - the word "nine" in Elvish - because that's what we are, nine. I visited the tattooist a couple times, showed him the drawing and stuff. I didn't say anything about Ian McKellen or whoever may be coming in. He just did it. We did all meet one morning and it was an interesting event, and I enjoyed it. Half a day. Actually everyone showed up. It goes along with all the other scars we got!"

Bill Boyd claimed he got behind the machine first, with Sean Astin holding his hand the whole time. They both got in on their foot. Read more about how it went here.

They all got a 'Nine' tattoo in Elvish, all nine of them; Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, Bill Boyd, Viggo Mortensen, Dominic Monaghan, Elijah Wood, Sean Bean, and uhm, the stunt double of John Rhys Davies.

You read that right, John Rhys Davies, who played Gimli, actually had his stunt double receive the tattoo instead. He shared, "The elvish tattoo was designed but, as I am a professional actor, whenever there’s anything dangerous or that involves blood, I sent my stunt double to do it."  It's so funny and so dumb that we have to credit Davies for his humour.
Here, they talk about their LOTR ink on the red carpet.

Director Peter Jackson also got himself a tattoo, a 'Ten' in Elvish.
